about

Originally released as a single 34 minute track on 77 cdrs via Reverb Worship

"This Wisconsin duo's two prior releases each included a smattering of vocals. Now they've gone the all-instrumental route and produced a 34-minute track that may be the best of the year. The opening section of chimes and processed strings is so like Richard Skelton that it could be mistaken for one of his works. But after ten minutes, things grow dark and dronelike, with dangerous thistles borne by tufts of searing air. Wisconsin, what hath thou wrought? Grinding Greiner rhythms puncture the proceedings until a church bell drives the bats away. Now we're halfway there. We still have to hack through a thick undergrowth of field recordings, wade through another swamp of strings, crawl up an embankment of shimmer, and trudge up a sullen, shadowed, pulse-laden slope until we can collapse, enervated, on the other side."

"5/5. For this release, Rain Drinkers have created a beautiful one track odyssey lasting a little over half an hour. I checked it last night as a going-to-bed soundtrack & it were divine, I tell thee! I was thinking along the lines of Godspeed & Dirty Three basically because of the swooping, mournful strings but beneath, once more, the spirit of 70s German synthesizer music is yawning and stretching its ambient tendrils, ready for another day's zen-like mind reconditioning. So you think for a period this is a drone recording? Well, of course, there's elements - fluctuating waves of sound mingle forebodingly on the perimeters of the music and eleven minutes in you're briefly plunged into a unnerving bristling chasm that sounds like a ketamine flashback in Tibet or something. Before long the piece almost peters out into a quiet hum of near-nothingness before the glorious doom-laden strings begin their escalating return to the fray with the tinkle of chimes & the approaching suggestion of more synth glory. When that synth does appear, it's bringing more tragic news. A sad, evocative thing that glides into your mind, both warm yet loaded with nuance & the thrum of regret. A lovely conclusion to another cracking feat from this duo!"

"Following on from "Bore Upon The Breath Of Dawn" from earlier this year / end of last year, this new release - one long track - from Zavier Krall and Joseph Taylor again mixes an intriguing array of influences and sounds. It opens with explosive hammer dulcimer flourishes and the haunting drone of field recordings that bubble distantly as if underwater, moves into elegaic modern composition - strings ebbing and flowing - and it is on this melancholic note that the piece ends. Like their last cdr, I doubt this will stick around for long."
